LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Geraldine Fortnightly Sale. Messrs Webster and Macdonald and Messrs J. and Co. publish entries for (bis sale, which takas place on Wednesday next. The Ministry.—lt is expected that all the members of the Government will reassemble in Wellington next week, when meetings of the Cabinet will be held daily to decide upon the measures to be presented to Parliament. Mr Fergus will leave for Dunedin in a fornight to address his constituents. The Premier is still confined to his house. Vt_y* Zealandia Rink, Temuka. —The above rink will be re-opened on Thursday next in the Volunteer Drill Shed, the floor of which has been taken tip, relaid, and planed. The contractors, Messrs Comer and Lnrcombe, have made a capital job of it, and the floor for rinking is now equal to any in the colony. During the winter months rinking will doubtless
again be popular. The Railway Returns.— The railway returns for the year ended 31at March last, have been published, and show that 3,132,803 passengers were carried, as against 3,451,850 in the previous year—a decrease of 319,047. There was also a decrease in lire stock and wool, but largo increases in grain and minerals, the excess in each being neatly 90,000 tons. The net profits for the year amount to a return of 2f per cent, on the total cost of the railways. Temuka Dairy Company.— The regular monthly meeting of the directors of the Temuka Dairy Company took place yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs Brown (Chairman), Scott, Mason, Cain, Bwker, and Dr. J. S. Hayes. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The secretary reported that 5201ga1». 41b. k of milk had been received at tha at a cost of £65. The account sales for various lots of cheese shipped, were submitted, and considered satisfactory. Routine business was attended to, and the meeting terminated. Arowhenua Cemetery Board.— The regular monthly meeting of the above board was hold last night. Present— Messrs K. F. Gray (chairman), Quinn, Blytb, and Aapinall (secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The carelakei’s report was submitted and approved of. Ha had paid to the secretary on account of fees the sum of £6 4s 6d. The secretary reported that the balance in bank was £6l 12s lid. Accounts 'e the amount of £7 14s 41 were passed for payment. The meeting then terminated. Eyadin® the Beer Duty.—At the R.M. Court, Nelson, yesterday, 16 charges of breaches of the Baer Durr Act were heard against Wallis and Page. The brewery is a small one at M.tnpipi, The charges were al of false entry. The charges against Page ware withdrawn, ns it was shown that ha hud ceased to be a
partner. No defence was offered by WnHK On Gvo charge? convictions were recorded, and finaa of £59 in eich case inflicted with costs, total £‘254 18s, and the plant and stock were forfeited. The other charges were withdrawn. Auction Sales,— ln oar advertising columns Messrs J. Muodell and announce a number of sale?. To-day they! hold a sale of furniture and effects. Ow Tuea’ay they sell Block at Winchester Fair, aud on Wednesday they sell stock at the Geraldine Yards. On Friday they hold an extensive clearing sale of horees, cattle, sheep, pigs, and farming impleoxents, vehicles, harness, produce, household furniture, etc., on account of Mr T, B. Crompton. The sale takes place on the homestead, Clarendon Farm, about three mile* from Winchester. On the 21at they hold a clearing sale of live and dead farm stock on account of Mr B. Trumper, at Pleasant Yalley. A New Football Sons. —We have received from the author, Mr D. W. M. Burn, M.A., of the Waitaki High School, a copy of the new football eong “The Grand Old British Game.” The composer ia an enthusiastic footballer of no mean order, and, having bad as his subject the game of which he is so fond, he has managed to impart to the song a vary great deal of the dash and spirit that pervades the footbiller as he contests a hard-fought match with a worthy opponent. The words are exceptionally good, and give one an idea of a loose rush of heavy, active forwards through all opposition, ending with a triumphant eheer from the spectators as the players dribble the bill over the line and fail on it. The air is by Mr Burn, and is very appropriate and catching. The accompaniment is by Mr Arthur J. Barth, of Dunedin. The song ia dedicated to Mr H. N. Hiakens, ex-captain Waihi Football Club. The whole is beautifully got up, and is lithographed by the Lyttelton Times Company on extra thiok paper, of good quality. The song should bo very popular with footballers during the present season, and command a ready sale.
Tbmwka Park Board.— Tho monthly meeting of this board was he'd last night. Present—Messrs K. F. Gray (chairman), M. Quinn, and Aspinall, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Tho secretary reported that Mr T. Powoll had written apologising for damage done, and agreeing to rectify same. Tho caretaker submitted reports c£ work done. The grass, etc., had been cut, fences mended, eo. He had received and paid to the treasurer the sum of £l2 17s 6d for hay, willows, etc. On® man had baon engaged in helping to cut down heavy willows. He had taken his pay out in firewood. Ha suggested that tho bo.ird should appoint souse of the members • mark trees that could be cut down and ‘sold for firewood. Two letters were received from the Temuka Town B)ard, relative to the blocking up of the park drain, into which tho town drains load, and asking that it bo cleared out. The secretary was instructed to reply Ip tho Temuka Town Board, drawing ther attention to the saetion of tho drain leading through the police reserve, which would first have to be cleaned. Tho balance in bank was £34 15) Sd, Accounts to the amount of £9 14a lid were passed for payment. Mr Quinn drew attention to the negligence of the public m neglecting to close the gates, and the secretary was instructed to sto the caretaker and arrange that the gats to the sports ground be locked ; and, also, that he report upon tho beet way to arrange for the small gates being closed or fixed in such a way that cattle cannot enter the park by them. Tho question of altering the hour of meeting to the daytime was discussed, and it was decided that tho present hour is more suitable for tho majority of the members. The stcratary raported that he hud visited the park lagoon, and bud seen three salmon and one trout. The meeting then terminated.

Ashbuhton Backs. —At the Ashburton Race Meeting on Thursday, the Hurdles (40 • hots) was won by Torrent, the Wakanui Stakes (25 soth) by Pennine, the Autumn Eace by Cymaro, the Welter Handicap (6 sots) bv Pennine, and the Plving Handicap (30 sovs) by Adulation. Yesterday the County Hurdles (30 sots) was won by Waireka, the Disposal Stakes (30 s<m) by Prime Donna, and the Grand Stand Handicap by P^in-ep-Bragh. WSlmyan Church, Temuri. —The Rev. K."S. Bunn will conduet the services in this Church to-morrow, the subject of his address in the morning being “ Meditations in a new Church,” and in the evening “ The Power and Glory of God in the Sanctuary.” The rev. gentleman will preach at Wailohi in the afternoon. Colonial Fobtinications.—THb Imperial uuthoritiee have issued a circular reqnest.ng that great circumspection be used in admitting strangers to fortifications and batteries, and that no one be allowed in without passes from the commanding officer. Regulations on the subject are already in force, but the Qoyernment intend to make them stricter. Annual Pig Sale ax Temuka.— The wet ;reatber prevailing yesterday compelled Messrs Gray and Montgomery to postpone their annual pig sale, and it will now take place on Monday, the 20th inat , when it is to be hoped better weather will prevail. A large number of entries had been made, and buyers were present, but sellers found it impossible to get the pigs to the yards, i Impobiabt Land Sale. —On Tuesday Mestra Mhlson and Co. (in conjunction [ with Messrs Grade, Maelsan, and Adam) will subnet to the hammer at Tinwu the wellk, know- Eskbank Estate, near St. Andrews, comprising 4786 acre*. The property will be offered ai a whole, and if not disposed of will be sold in-ten farms, ranging in area from 825 to 908 ' acres. The land is of first-class quality-better it would be hard to find—and the terms are easy. The stock and implements will be sold at the Homestead Farm on the 17th May. Alleged Smuggling.—A gentleman in Wellington, who was for many years connected with the Police Department, informs the Poet that smuggling ie carried on to suoh an extent that the colony is losing reyenue at the rate of £250,000 per annum, and expresses the opinion that increased vigilance on the part of the Customs authorities would prevent a good deal of this illicit trade. The informant mentions a ease where a certain tradesman in Auckland was recently offered an opportunity of purchasing a ton of tobacco at Is per lb, landed from a whaling vessel on a part of the coast which is not frequently visited by human beings. A Bankbupi in Trouble—At a meeting at Wellington of the creditors of J. J. Ingram, tobacconist, the assets, which included £135 put down as stock, showed a deficiency of £225. The assignee stated thot on stock being taken, not a cigar or a single stick of tobacco was found on the premises. There were only a few cigarettes and sticks. The debtor had been in business only four months, and had apparently been living at the rate of £IOO per month. Ingram underwent examination, and at the conolusien the creditors resolved “ that a solicitor be engaged to take steps .to criminally prosecute the debtor, and ihahw public examination is considered desirabler 1 Magisterial.—On Thursday, at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Temuka, George Ramsay was charged before J. T. M. Hay hurst, Esq., J.P., with refusing to leave the Royal Hotel when called upon. The evidence against the accused was briefly lo the effect that be bad repeatedly entered the kitchen of the Royal Hotel, and refused to leave when requested to do so. Accused said that when requested by Mrs McAteer to leave he had left, and met the constable at tho door. Constable Tarrant proved the arrest of licensed. The Bench decided to dismiss the case. Pbofessob TJhleich’s Visit to Kakahc, —At a meeting of the Geraldine County Council on Wednesday a letter was read from the JS.Z. Exhibition Committee in reference to mineral exhibits, and the following dialogue is reported to have taken place:—The chairman (Mr Balfour) said there were no minerals in the county. Mr Howdl: How about tho professor who was in the district Ihe other day—in one day and out the next ? it was the greatest farce I ever heard of. Mr Marchant (the engineer) : There was a misunderstanding about that. Nobody had anything to show him. Mr Howell: We expected be was coming here to show us something. Mr Barker: He expected people to unearth
things before he came; but if you do that you don’t want a professor. Wo wanted some one to tell us what to dig out. Mr Howell ! I thought ho would do a few days’ prospecting himself. It was a most ridiculous ■farce. —The subject then dropped.
