THE EXPRESS.—The express train service between Dunedmani Ohristehurch will come into operation on Monday, 13th inst. Gbbakdinb Road Board Election.— The poll tor the election of member* of the Geratdine Road Board takes place on Mon> Jay. The Waipiro Murder.—At a meeting of the Executive at Wellington on Wednesday, the execution of the Waipiro murderer was fixed for Monday week, May 13th. Revenue Returns. The Customs revenue collectod during the month of April for the colony w*s £116,049. The beer duty for the colony for the same period was £4622. Masonic Social.—A highly successful social in connection with the Masooic Lodge, Qeraldine, took place on Thursday evening last; A full report will appear in our next. Sale or Property.—By an advertisameat appearing oliewhere it will be sees that Meisra J. Mundell and Co. sell the Woodbury Hotel with its stock and furniture on Tuesday next. The Tiraaru Hurdlo Bioe was won by Torront; Hollywood won the District Plate, and MoLeod's Oasian the Trot. The Cup fell to Chudleigh. The Novel Rioa was won by Jesuio, and ths Waahdyko Welter by Doubtful. On Friday Panic secured the Handioap Hurdles, and Apropos the 3.0 J.O. Handioap. The Trot wa» won by Krippel. The Selling Race fell to Jaok, while The Brewer won the County Plate. Lecture.—Miss Ackerman, thetolented lecturess, of the Women's Temperance Mission, delivered an address in the VolunteerHall,Teinuka, lasteveningtoone oftho largest audiences that has ever assembled there. The chair was taken by the Be v. T. A. Hamilton, and the itev. R. S. Bunn also took part in the proceedings. A powerful choir was conducted by Mr W. G. Rutland, and there was a full instrumental orchestra uuder the leadership of Mr Proudlock. A more detailed report will appear in our next issue. Serious Accident—.On" 1 hursday morning Mr Mada Hansen, of Woollcombe s Gully, Timaru, mot with a serious and painful accident. While preparng his gun prior to a shooting expedition the barrel, from soma unexplained reason, burst, fthattering the poor fellow's leffe hand. Gift Auction at Temuka. —On Friday and Saturday next there will be a sale of gifts and gift auction ia the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, in aid of the building fond of (he new Wesleyan Church. Among other objects of interest there will be exhibited and sold a very handsome monogram quilt. There will also be a large quantity of farmers' produce. Tek Qovehnob.—His Excellency the Governor arrived at Wellington at on Thursday, at 2.30 p.m., and waa received by the Premier and (lis Mayor. A carriage was in waiting, and a start was at once made for Government Buildings. The flerefeauoga Light Horse formed up in front as an escort, preceded by Friendly Societies, pupils from Wellington and Bt. Patrick's Colleges, and behind cauae members of Ihe Harbor Board, the City Counoil, and other bodies. The procession moved along Thorndon Quay, past the wharves to Lambton Quay, where it turned and marched down to the Government Buildings. Here some addresses of welcome were presented and replied to, and the oath was administered by the Chief Justiee. Football.—A prrcticematch between the >V»ibi first fifteen and fifteen chosen from the TetnukaandDarktown Clubs takesplace at Temuka to-day, commencing at 3-30 p.m. The following aretequested to be on tho ground :—Stewrt, Gray, J. Austin, Black, B. Lavery, McCallum, E. S. Smith, Hope, A. Clinch, H. Lavery, Findlay, Dyson, Storey, Greaves, Russell, Bryan, and Fitzgerald.—On the 18th inst. a match between the w aihi first and a team from the Ashburton-Rakaia Clubs will probably take pLice at Geraldine, and on the 24th inst. the return match, East Christchnrch v. Waihi, takes place at Winchester. St. Saviour's Church, Temuka. We are informed that His Lordship the Bishop of Christchurch will praach at the morning service on Sund»y next, when the Holy Communion will be celebrated. It is hoped that all Communicants will endeavor, to be present to partake of this last maal with this aged servant of the Lord, who will probably never again visit this church. The Confirmation will take placw inthaevening with a shortened Evensong. Tho band will accompany the organ. The church will no doubt be filled to overflowing upon 'his interesting; occasion. Temuka Football Club.—The annual ball in connection with the Temuka Football Club took place on Thursday evening in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, which was tastefully decorated. Advantage was taken of the occasion to present to the successful players the trophies competed for during the season. Mr A. M. Clark, vice-president, presented the trophies, consisting of a handsome marble timepiece and a ohaste silver cup, tho gifts of Messrs Flint and Cutton respectively. The recipients were Mr G Velvin (best back), Mr Flint's trophy, and MrE. Cirr (best forward), Mr Cutteti'a trophy. The ball waa well attended, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The committee are deserving of the highest credit for the excellent arrangements made. No detail was omitted that might tend to add to tho comfort or nnjoyment of their eruosts, The floor was in good order, the supper excellent, and the music all that could be desired. Of the acting committee Messrs Flint, Velvin (hon. sec), and Gunnioo deserve special mention.

Geraldinb Road Board.—Upon the Geraldina Road Board coming out of committee upon the annual report and balance-sheet at their meeting on Tuesday List, Mr Flatman said 48 thia was the last meeting they would have before the general election, and an tho chairman did not intend to come forward again, he would take this opportunity of proposing a hearty YotG of thanks to Mr W. Poatlethwaite for his past services. He very iiuch regretted he; could not see his way to come forward at the present election. Mr McShane had much pleasure in seconding the vote of thanks, and expressed his concurrence in all Mr Flatman had said. No donbt the ratepnyers were largely indebted to Mr Poatlethwaite for his services on the board ; the preseut financial position of the board was largely owing to his careful attention to the board's business act chairman. Mr Slack also expressed approTal of what had been said. He very much regretted that Mr Poslletuwaite had made up his mind to retire from the board. He was afraid they would not get a chairman who would devote as much of his tiaae to the interests of the ratepayers. Mr Kelland also endorsed the remarks of the other members, and regretted losing Mr Postlethwaite's services. Mr Postlethwaito in returning thanks said that if at any time he had offended aoyone by the expression of his opinions, it had been done in the interest of public business, and in tha true interests of tho district at largo. It had been a pleasure to him to preside over the meetings of the board, and he thanked the present members for the cordial manner in which they had supported him as chairman in conducting the business of the board. He hoped the new members would give the same support to the coming chairman, whoever he might bo, for anless the chairman was well supported he could not conduct tho affairs of the bonrd in the manner they demanded. A fire at St Bathan's destroyed the drapery stores and stable of McConnochie, and Thurston's Vulcan Hotel. The insurances on McOonnochie's amounted to £2550, and on the hotel to £6OO. McConnochie estimates he loses £4OOO.
