A PRESENT TO THE GOVERNMENT.

At the Assessment Court, Waimate, Mr J. E Clement, solicitor, objected to the valuation of 300 acres of land at Waihao, near Pentland Hills, also to his name appearing on the roll as owner. He stated that he had conveyed the land as a gift back to the Government, and that he was not the owner. He had tried for years to get a road to it*, but the department had not given him one, therefore the land was valueless, and he had conveyed it back to the Government, He said the Premier in his speech at Auckland had stated that he would like to see a lot of land back in the hands of the Government, and here is a case in : point where the Government had been made a present of 300 acres of land : for which he (Mr Clement) had paid £6OO. The Board asked Mr Clement if the Government had accepted the transfer, and were informed that they had at first refused to accept, but since lie had written a second time he had received no reply. One of the Reviewers here remarked that he would be very glad to accept it if Mr Clement would make it over to him. Mr Clement advised the gentleman to apply to the Government for it as they were the owners. After consideration the Board of Eeviewers decided that they could not allow tho objection of " not the owner," but intimated that they would advise the Commissioner not to press for the rates on this section, as it was a very hard case that Mr Clement could get no road to his land.—Press.
