FOOTBALL.

A match between the Temuka and Darktown Clubs took place in the Temuka Park on Saturday afternoon. The following were the teams: — Temuka : Full-back, "W. Hobbs; three-quarter-backs, J. Clinch, W. Mendelson, and R. Lavery; half-backs, Gray, and I). Stewart; forwards, Carr, A. Stewart, Hope, A. Clinch, Black, Morton, and McOallum. Darktown: Full-back, J. Russell; three-quarter-backs, R. McLeod, F. Storey, and J. sAflderson; half-backs, Findlay aod pSjßon; forwards, Gaff an ey, Fitzgerald, Turnbull, H. Lavery, Polaschok, Austin, W. Russell, Lyon, and Greaves. F. K. Gray captained the Temuka men and "W. Dyson the Darktown. The game was a fast and exciting one, both teams doing their utmost to score. In the first spell a try was obtained for Temuka by A. Stewart, but no goal resulted from the kick, which was taken by Mendelson. In the second spell Gaffaney and Fitzgerald obtained a try each for Darktown, and; Mendelson one for Temuka. J. Russell took beth kicks for Darktown, and succeded in placing a goal from Gaffaney’s try. J. Clinch was entrusted with the kick for Temuka, hut he failed to increase the score. The Darktown Club thus won the match by a goal and a try (4 points) against two tries (2 points). For Darktown, J. Russell, as fullback, played well, while the tackling pf McLeod and Anderson, and the punting of Storey, at three-quarter, was excellent; Findlay, at half, also deserves mention. The forwards on© and all worked well, but Gaffaney, Fitzgerald, and Turnbull were ever on the ball. For Temuka, Mendelson, Clinch, and Gray were the most conspicuous of the backs, the two former ’for their running, and the latter for hjs tackling. Of the forwards Carr, 1. Stewart, Morton, andMcOallum played well, the two first-named especially. Messrs F. LeCren and T. Gunnion •umpired for Temuka and Darktown respectively, and Mr J. L. Flint carried the referee’s whistle with satisfaction to all.
