THE REVOLUTION IN HAYTI.
The captain of the steamer Harold | which left Port de la Paix, Hayti, on the 20th ult., reports that a battle was fought recently at; La Grande Saline between the troops of President Legitime and General Hippolyte, in which the former was routed. It is added that two hundred prisoners were taken, including twelve generals, all of whom, the report says, were inhumanly butchered. The New York Herald publishes iatelligence from Saint Marc, Hayti, dated the 28th of January, to this effect: boats bombarded and destroyed La Grande Saline on the 24th January, killing and wounding many of the inhabitants, though a number saved themselves by flight. The gunboats subsequently landed a force of 330 men to hold the place, and sailed, on the 25th. Six hundred of General Hippolyte's troops, who had meanwhile been lying in ambush round the town, concluded their arrangements on the 27th, when they poured into the place, surprising General Legitime's men, who, with no means of retreat, were compelled to depend on their own resources for defending the town. The attacking force showed no quarter, and no prisoners were taken. After many of General Legitime's men had either been killed or wounded, those who still survived fled towards the shore, but they were pursued and shot down, not one being spared. The gunboats meanwhile had proceeded to St. Marc, which place they shelled, destroying many buildings. Two of the inhabitants were killed and many wounded, 12 of them mortally. General Cauvine, one of President Legitime's commanders, was shot for treason," The Herald account says nothing of the 12 generals being shot, but several other reports mention the circumstance.
