ST. SAVIOUR'S CHURCH, TEMUKA.
The! services which have been held in St. Saviour's Church during the Lenten season were fittingly brought to a conclusion by a week's mission during Holy week. The mission services were conducted by the Rev. J. Holland, Chaplain to the Public Institutes at Christchurch. Having had to minister to the inmates of the gaol, lunatic asylum, and hospital for several years, besides having served as a missionary in Borneo and China, the inissioner was eminently fitted for this work. The services were very
well attended from first to last. The ..series of addresses delivered were T characterized' by a rare eloquence and electrical sympathy seldom united in one man—rsanly, outspoken, and practical—-their influence will long be felt Toy those who were privileged to hear them. Whilst evidently exercising a powerful influence on the, minds and hearts of the large congregations, there was no undue excitement, but a subdued quietness, which indicated great power, well exemplifying the motto of the great Church, of which he is a representatative, "In quietness and confidence shall be vour strength." The services on Good" Friday were held at 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7.30 p.m., and were most Bolemn and impressive, the addresses in the afternoon on the " Seven last words from the cross " being most touching and beautiful. An instrumental band, newly organised, accompanied the organ at the services, the instruments augmenting the stops which that instrument already possesses, e.g., flute, clarionet, &c. The evening service on Good Friday was concluded by the congregation standing and repeating the Apostles Creed, the singing of the Te Deum being followed by the Benedictus, when the nussioner took his leave of the i people, presenting memorial or resolucards to those who desired them. the mission special addresses were given to men on "Social purity," and to women on " Women's influence," and to the children. Mr Holland
leaves this morning for Chnstchurch, in order to conduct the services for the volunteers at the encampment, ' Moeraki Downs, on Easter Sunday. St. Saviour's Church will be decorated as usual for the Easter services, and many who have derived benefit from the mission will rejoice in the gladness of the commemoration of that grtat resurrection day and their rising to a new life.
