GREAT FIRE AT FIJI.
Auckland, April 16.
The Wainui, which has just arrived from Fiji, brings news that damage to the extent of £40,000 was caused by a fire at Levaka on April 6th. The Bank of New Zealand was burnt. New Zealand Insurance Offices suffer largely. The fire broke out on the evening of the 6th inst. in one of the copra stores belonging to Mr Hennings, on the norlh side of New street. In a very short time the stores, containing 3000 tons of copra, were wrapped in flames, which spread rapidly, until those and the following buildings were destroyed : —O. Hennings’ wine and sugar store ; Gave and Co.’s premises ; W. Hennings’ house and office; Garrick’s office; D. W. Salomon’s stores; G. Morgan and Co.’s store ; Bank of New Zealand premises, and those of the Mortgage Agency Company. The progress •f the fire was stopped at Potter’s butchery by a bucket brigade.
