IRISH AFFAIRS.
London, April 11. Three hundred leading city men gave a banquet to Mr W, H. Smith last night, In the course of his speech, in reply to the toast of the evening, the leader of the House of Commons said he felt confident the cause of the Union would be triumphant if the merchants,, bankers, and manufacturers supported it. He declared the obstructionists in the House of Commons were trying to exhaust the physical strength of members. Mr Balfour, Irish Secretary, also spoke during the evening, and taunted the Opposition with being impotent to control the followers below the gangway.
