At Nelson in the case against Robert Campbell for an unnatural offence a juror was taken ill on Wednesday night, and the jury were discharged. On Thursday the Crown entered a nolle prosequi. At the Supremo Court, Invercargill, on Wednesday, Ah Chop was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for attempting to steal gold from a race. The Masons at Waipnwa have decided to support the movement in favor of establishing a United Grand Lodge of New Zealand.
Nelson Bros, haye decided to start large freezing works at Wuipnkuuru which will employ some 60 men when in woik. They sxpect to make a start in October. A 60oz nugget has been ■ found at Moonlight, one of the oldest diggings on the West Coast, This is the second largest nugget ever found there. It was found about 40 feet above the bed of the creek. The estimated expenditure of the Christchurch city council for the forthcoming year is £23,909, including an overdraft of £5691. £15,229 is to be raised by rates, and the overdraft at the end of the year will be £6200. A newspaper runner at Ohristchuicb named Harry Smith committed suicide by taking aconite after a disagreement with a woman with whom he lived. At the inquest held on Thursday evening a verdict “Took poison while temporarily insane ” was returned.
Some of the unemployed at Dunedin are to be given work on the Otago Central Railway and on road work at Catties. At Wellington on Wednesday Owen McArdle, secretary of the Junction Brewery Company, was charged before the Resident Magistrate with having neglected to make a true and exact entry of nine hogsheads of beer sold on the 30th October last. The company was charged with a similar offence under a separate information. Mr Robinson, Resident Magistrate, fixed the penalty at £SO on each information. In the case against the company he allowed £3 3s solicitor’s fee and 7s costs of court. The conviction against the company includes by the statute the forfeiture of all the beer in the brewery at the date when the alleged fraud was committed, and also all the plant and utensils used in the manufacture of such beer. The same defendants were fined £4O and costs for neglecting to cancel scamps. At the same court Hamilton Gilmour, proprietor of the Empire Hotel, was fined £2O and costs for receiving a cask of beer from the Junctioi Brewery, the stamp on which had not been properly cancelled.! The Auckland Rugby Union have a credit balance of £343 19s 6d. The Freemasons of the Auckland district have agreed that it is desirable that a United Grand Lodge of New Zealand should be formed.
Daring March outdoor relief was given by the North Canterbury Charitable Aid Board in 468 different cases, being 7 lees than in February, but 18 more than in March, 1888, Thirty-three which were relieved in March had not been assisted in February, and 40 of the February cases did not recur in March.
The ninth annual exhibition of the Canterbury Society of Arts was opened at Christchurch on Wednesday night by the President, Mr R. Beetham, who in his address refeired to the loss art had sustained by the death of Mr Gully. On the whole the exhibition is an improvement on former years. This year there are 151 oils, and 79 water colors ; last year there were 138 oils and 107 water colors.
