AUTUMN MEETING. First Day.

The first day’s racing of the above fixture took place on Thursday last. The weather was exactly the opposite to that usually enjoyed by the Geraldine Club for their meetings, being very wet and cold. To this cause may no doubt to a great extent bo attributed the exceedingly small attendance of the public. The racing was upon the whole of a very good character, the finishes in most cases being close, although the fields were small. In spite of the small fields the public failed more than once to “ spot the winner,” the dividends paid by Messrs Mason and Roberts, who had the totaliaator, being in most cases good, Mr Dowse, the Club’s bandicapper, is to be congiatulated upon the closeness of the finishes. The arrangements made by the Committee were as usual very complete, although the absence of a band was pretty freely commented upon. A little music would have helped to enliven the monotony of the unpleasant day. Mr F, Wilson Smith, the secretary, was obliging to all. In the absence of Mr J. Meikle, Mr Lawson acted as starter for the Hurdles, and Mr G. Cults, of Christchurch, for the other races. Mr Cutts deserves the host thanks of the Club for his services. In every instance the horses were sent away together. Owing to the small attendance and the wot weather neither the holders of the publicans’ nor refreshment booths appeared to d» much trade. The following are the results Handicap Hurdle Race, of 20 sovs. About miles, over 6 flights of hurdles, Mr F. Jones’s Monteagle, 10st 31b (Owner) 1 Mr C. Hammond's Korari, Sst 7lb (Baumber) 2 Messrs J. and D. Gibson’s Hollywood, 9st 51b (Collins) 3

Torrent and Swamp Hen were scratched. At the fall of the flag Monteagle and Hollywood cantered slowly along for the first 200 yards, while Korari made good use of the time to get a start of his opponents. Having negotiated the first hurdle the two went in pursuit of the leader. At the far side of the course Monteagle want up to the little bay, who ran a game race ell through. Entering the straight the big black shook off his opponent and won comfortably, Hollywood a bad. third. Totalisator—Montosgle 24, Korari 9, Hollywood 11. Dividend, £ll3s. Time, 3mia 17sec.

Novel Flat Race Handicap, of 20 bovs. 6 furlongs. The winner to be the property of the Club, and to be submitted to auction after the race. Mr S. Alexander’s Starlight, 7at Sib (Robinson) 1 Mr J. Murphy’s Eclipse, Gat 101 b (McOallochie) 2

Oyraaro was stratched. Starlight went away with a lead, which she maintained all the way, winning comfortably. Totalisator—Starlight 4, Eclipse 2. Dividend, £1 2s GJ. Time, Imin 23 4-stb sec. Sir Julius also started. Marat played up slightly at th« post, but when the fljg fell to an even start he went to the front, and maintained the lead fill half way up the straight for home, Erin-go-bragh and Zealot keeping him close company. About half-way up the straight the grey caught the leader, and a splendid finish resulted in Erin-go-bragh landing the winner by n neck, Zealot just heating Murat for second place. Glenora and Little Shamrock also started. Pippin was scratched. This was a splendid race. Little Shamrock, Glenora, and Sir Julias jumped away with the lead, the first-named maßiog the running, with Jack close up. Entering the straight the field closed up, but two hundred yards from homo the winner was still unspotted, every horse in the race being named in turn. Jack, however, came with a great rush from the outside rails, and won by about half a length, amid the greatest excitement, the others being all in a cluster. Totaliaator —Jack 7, Doubtful 4, Sir Julius 21, Glenora 29, Little Shamrock 5. Dividend, £8 9s. Time, Imin 20fsecs. Squatters’ District Handicap, of 15 sovs. 1 mile. Horses competing in this race must have been owned and trained in the district three months prior to the meeting, The district extends from the south bank of the V Rakaia to the north bank of the Borso Range, Oamaru. Mr A. McLeod's Medea, 7st 41b (Burns) 1 Mr S. Alexander’s Doubtful, Sat (Mcllrey) 2 Mr P. Burke’s Little Shamrock,6st 101 b (Wisby) 3 . Inch Keith also started. Little Shamrock got away with a slight lead, but at the back of the course Doabtfu) and Medea went to the front. The two horses raced hard to the home turn, while Little Shamrock also came up, and an excellent race up the straight landed Medea a winner by two or three lengths, Little Shamrock making a game struggle with Doubtful for second place. Totaliaator— Medea 10, Doubtful 29, Little Shamrock 11, Inch Keith 10. Dividend, £s' Ba. Time, Imin Slsecs. 1 District Handicap Time Trot (in saddle), of 10 sovs. No weight under 10st. Pull and go. At the commencement of the race a good tussle between the Orari and Geraldine horsos, Semolina and Jumbo, was expected to take place, but Jumbo quickly caught the mare, who hadV three seconds start. Each tiipe h#** assayed to pass her, however, he broke, thereby losing ground. Finally having passed her ho went in pursuit of Ihe leader, whom ho would apparently have beaten bad he not broken a few yards from home. At the back of the course Presto want up to Monteagle, and passed the big horse at the next hurdle, and was never again caught, winning easily by three lengths,' Panic securing second place by lengths. Hobbs) 0 Murat played up a little at the start, and was led up to the post. When the flagf ell the jockey slipped one foot out of his stirrup,, and in trying to pick it up lost the other. Eight out of the nine horses on the card faced the starter for this event, and some difficulty was experienced in getting them away. When the flag fell Monteagle was left'at the post, Sir Julius and Jack showing in front with Doubtful aod Little Shamrock well up. This order was ramotained throughout, the field keeping close together. The three placed horses made a splendid finish up the straight.
