A CRUSADE aGATNST SMOKING,

A regular crusade against smoking seems to have commenced in Sheffield. At a meeting held there, Dr Eobert Martin, of Manchester, who was one of a deputation from the AntiNarcotic League, made a speech an which he said he thought it would be admitted by every unprejudiced man that the use of tobacco was opposed—directly opposed—to the instincts of our nature, to the laws of our constitution, and to the designs of a beneficent Creator. In proportion as a men took tobacco did he render his blood impure, and rendering impure his blood did he lower the tone of his constitution, and open a door through which the shafts of disease might •enter. Only those who had smoked /TOd given up the habit could estimate how much injury might be done by what they had supposed to be moderate smoking. He noticed that Roberts, the great; billiard player, had been ordered to give up smoking if he wished to maintain the position he holds as a player. He also saw that " great terrible brute of a fellow" from America, who came over here some few months ago to lick every Englishman who would stand up against him —the man Sullivan—had been ordered by bis physician to give up smoking if he was to go into training again. And if a great giant like that could be injured by smoking, what must smaller persons be likely to suffer.
