TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

*■ A special meeting of the Temuka School Committee was held on Tuesday evening last. Present—Messrs J. T. M. Hay hurst (in the chair), E. Brown, K, P. Gray, J". Blyth, and A. R. Allan.

The Chairman explained that the meeting was called for the purpose of considering applications for the position of head mistress. In all seventeen applications were received, out of which the Inspector recommended seven. The Inspector urged the Committee to be careful in their selection, as he said that it required rare qualities of head and heart to conduct such a school as Temuka. The applications, which in every case were accompanied by numerous testimonials, were considered seriatim. Ultimately it was resolved that the committee recommend Misses Philips (certificate E 27), and Stewart (certificate E 3) for the appointment, the former for choice.

The question of closing the school for Easter holidays was deferred until the ordinary meeting. The secretary intimated that Mr Kalaugher had given notice of his intention of resigning his position, and he (the secretary) had accordingly written to the Board of asking that the necessary steps might be taken for filling the vacancy.

The chairman stated that the concert had realised £8 19s lid. It w&s agreed to deduct amount borrowed, from the prize account, and carry the* balance forward to the incidental! fund. / The meeting then terminated,
