NEWS FROM STANLEY.
London, April 2, A letter from Stanley has been received in vhich the explorer states that on the 4tb September he left Emin Bey well, April 3. 'lhe letter received from Stanley describes the horrors of the passage through forests and swamp in search of Emm Bey, whieh occupied six months instead of a fortnight as anticipated, Both the forests and swamps were infested with dwarfs with poisoned arrows, and tierce aborigines armed with spears. They-had also to contend against wild beasts and venomous insects. Fever was rampant among his followers, and at times they were threatened with famine. On emerging on to the grassy plains the expedition behaved as if mad with joy. Betveon Ituria and Lake Albert Nyauza there was incessant fighting between Stanley’s followers and hostile natives. All this time the members of the expedition were living on pungi nuts and nearly all were reduced to a skeleton and 1 almost naked. Many deaths occurred ■aad a large number of his Arab followers deserted him. The land uver which the expedition passed wap a homb;o wilder, jess until reaching Ituria, wnero supplies were obtained in abundance. Stanley spent nearly six days with Emin Bey, whom he left on Juno 16th on his re-
turn journey, aui sixty days later fell in with the miserable remains of the late Major Bartclott’rt expedition. It was ascertained that 200 of Maj.or Bartololt’s followers had perished from exhaustion and want of food, and those who had survived were mere scarecrows. The latter had endured suffering almost indescribable. Stanley says that Emin Bey being in doubt as to whether it was possible to remove the ten thousand women and children attached to his camp, had determined to remain where he is. Stanley expected to rejoin Emin Bey on Dec. 10'h, when he hoped to say fareweli to Congo and its forests.
