PARNELL V. THE TIMES.
London, March 22. In the Hoase of. Commons Sir William. Vernon flarcourt moved bis amendment, criticising the action of Sir [ R. E, Webster, the Attorney-General, ] in connection with the proceedings before the Parneli Commission. He accused the Attorney-General of delaying to call Pigott until he had piled up everything ho could which was likely to prejudice' Mr Parneli, though he was awara that : Pigott's evidence was quite untrustworthy. Sir R. E. Webster,'in replying to the strictures passed on hiru by Sir W. Vernon Harcourr, said that Pigott 'uad written him a letter admitting that he would not be able to stand the crossexamination, and this letter he (Sir R. E. Webster) handed to Sir Charles Russell, the leading counsel for the Parneilitee, five days bofore Pigott was called as a witness. He stated further that at the request of Sir Charles Russell he refrained from reading this tetter to the Cornmiseiion immediately -upon its teciipt. The apology published by the Times upon the collapse of the cape wjith respect to the forged letters wan -written by him (Sir R. E, Webster) and bb considered that it was an nmpta apology. In the course of tho dobato Mr Parneli challenged any member preseufi to avow his belief that >;lie letters wera actually | written by him as had been- by J the Times, ' I
Mr Redmond's motion to reduce the Attorney-General's salary as a protest against his action in the case, was negatived by a majority of 80, Mr Morley's attack on Mr Balfour, toe Secretary for Ireland, was negatived by a majority of 64. ' Mr G. Lewis, solicitor for Mr Parnnll, has secured Pigott's dinry. Its publication is expected to make a great sensation.
