A man named Stowart, belonging to the barque Devonport, "was drowned on Tuesday near Hokianga, where the vessel was loading timber, I Wilkie Bros and Wilson have discharged nil the I'nion men on their contract at Westport, employing only men they have imported. Things are quiet. At the Supreme Court, Napier, five prisoners pleaded guilty. Four of them were brought up and sentenced yesterday, viz., James Morton, larceny, two years; Jas. Atchison, forgery, placed, under the Probation Act; John Kennedy, forgery, two years ; Thomas Topping, Corgery, two years. An action for £60,000 damages has been brought in the High Commissioners’ Court, Samoa, by Macuaraara and F. Cornwell, who claim that sum from Win. McArthur and Co. for the produce of four plantations alleged to have been wrongfully seized and occupied by the defendants. Mr W. J. Napier, solicitor foe the plaintiffs, goes to Samoa on Monday. A large gathering of the Tuwliarstoa tribes is taking place in the Taupo district to elect a chief in the place of the late Hauheu Tukino. King Tawhiao with 150 followers has arrived. The meeting will discuss the extinction of the Hau Han religion, so that all the Maoris in the district may have one chief and one religion. Many Natives are followers of Tc Kooti, but the present is .considered a favorable opportunity to destroy his influence and religion. Thomas Fitzpatrick, lodging house keeper, Wellington, was sentenced tofourteen days imprisonment by the Chief Justice for obtamin g goods just previous to becoming a bankrupt by representing bis wife’s property as his own.
