Thitrsday Island, March 15. Tlae following items of Eastern news were received by the mail steamer; —
Negotiations are proceeding with the Vatican to send a Papal nuncio to Pekin. Viscount Mori was assassinated on Februi.ry 31th by a fanatical religionist, who pi unged a knife into his abdomen because the Viscount entered the shrine without removing his boots. The treaty recently concluded between China and Portugal was brought to an ’'issue by China threatening to blockade Macao unless Portugal accepted it. The treaty virtually places Macao at the disposal of the Chinese customs authorities, Fifty highwaymen have been executed at Kirin, Japan. The Gazette says military relations between France and Japan have practically been severed. By a fire at Pekin Palace damage was dona estimated to reach 3,000,000 taels,
During the riots at Chin Kiang the bouses of the British Consul and two clergyman and the Baptist Church were burned down, The Methodist chapel, the American Consulate, and the Custom House were partially destroyed. The steamer Taiyuan, bound from New Zealand to Hong Kong, ran ashore in Palawan passage, north of Borneo. A boat was seat M 0 miles to obtain assistance, but in the meantime the ship floated off and reached Manilla, after* wards arriving safely at Hong Kong.
