FIRES.

i Awohland, March 18. Three fires took place in the city yesterday. The first, which 1 broke out at 2.30 a.m. was in the premises of Fenton and Co., hatters, Queen street. It was fortunately discovered by the constable on " beat, and soon extinguished. The stock was insured for £3OOO in the Now Zealand. He estimates his loss by fire and water at about £ISOO. The second one occurred in a block of wooden buildings on the Karangahape road. It originated on the roof of the premises of Grubb, baker, and was not suppressed till five shops and dwellings had been gutted. The premises destroyed are—-Grubb’s, the Frozen Meat Company’s butchery, Turner’s (fruiterer), Kelly’s (grocer), and Andrews’ (photographer). Branchraan Andrew Brennigan, while on the verandah, was enveloped by flames and seriously burnt about the back and legs. His clothes were burnt off him and his helmet shrivelled to ashes. Kelly’s and Andrews’ premises belonged to the New Zealand Insurance Company, and it is balieyed they were insured for £IOOO. Grubb’s stock was insured for £125 in the New Zealand. Turner was uninsured. The third fire, which occurred at 8.30 p.m,, destroyed a cottage in Grundy street owned and occupied by Percy Porter. Insurances unknown. . ■ Dunedin, March 18.
