The Stamp Act.—A prosecution commenced at Timuru yesterday against the South Canterbury Refrigerating Company for breach of the Stamp Aet in connection with a policy of marine insurance, tho premium on which was £66. Tho case was adjourned till the 25th.

Gebaidink Rifles. —A parade of tlm corps was bold in the Volunteer Hall on Thursday evening lap!:, Captain E. H. Pearpoint being in command. There were 32 men on parade. After being inspected and put through various company movements the men were dismissed.

Rifle Shooting.—The following team have been picked from the Geraldino Rifles to firo against the team from the C Battery in Timaru on Thursday next :—Lieut. Ward, Col.-Sergt. Stonehouse, Sergeants Millard, Flaming, and Brown, Corporals Stonehouse and Heatley, and Privates Baughen, South, and Irvine.

Entebtaihmbnt at Temuka.—Oa Friday eveniag next a musical and dramatic entertainment in oid of the prize fund of the Temuka school will take place in the Volunteer Hall. The programme, which appears in our advertising columns, is a first-rate one, and should draw a full house.

A Uastabdly Cbimk. —A telegram from Auckland says a man, whose name is unknown, advertised last week for a lady help for the country. He inveigled a girl do a lonely spot near the riverbed, on Saturday night, and attempted a criminal assault. He kept hor all night in an old hut, and next morning allowed her to go. The police have been searching for the man sines, but no traces ■have been found of him. The Taiebi Crojs.—The most important of the Otogo agricultural statistics published are those for the Taieri county, where there is a decrease in the area under wheat. The estimated yield is set down at 35| bushels per acre, but even with this the total yield is estimated to be below last year's by 26,771 bushels. There is an increase in the area under oats, and the yield is estimated at 333,383 bushels,, or 69,148 bushels more than last year. Distbict Coubt. —At the Distriot Court, Tim'iru, on Thursday lifrt, before His Honour Judge Ward, orders of disobarge were granted as follows:—Benjamin Mack (Mr C. T. H. Perry for Mr Hay) ; W. Fowler Christie, (Messrs Smithson and Baymond); Henry Saunders (Mr Hamilton, of Waimate) ; W. Denoou (Messrs Smithson, Eaymond and Smith) ; Michael McAteer (Mr Perry for Mr Hay). Ee Bruce's Patent Oatmeal and Milling Company. Mr Knubley as agent for Messrs Stewart and Holmes, made application to His Honour on the part of the official liquidators of the company known as Bruae'a Patent Oatmeal and Milling Company for directions as to the pioceediogs to bo tiken [ for ascertaining the debts due by the said company ; for bringing in the list of contributor's ; as to what advertisements shall be issuod fo>* such purpose ; as to the proceedings thereon, and whether the official liquidators should not bava leave to appoint a solicitor or solicitors to assist them in the performance of their duties. After hearing Mr Knubley His Honor directed that oil olaims should be sent in by April 15lh; that adjudication of claims be made on May 15th ; that advartisef mßiits be issued at Titnaru and Dunediu ; that the list of contributories be certified to on April 15tli, and that leave be granted to the oflicul liquidators to appoint a solicitor. On tho application of Mr Raynaond for Messrs Smithson and Raymond, His Honour sanctioned an application to compromise with certain contributories named. On the application of Mr Raymond His Honour ordered letters of administration to issue to W. McKibbin in re Mary Taylor deceased, and granted probate to Elizabeth and Joseph Burborough in re Joseph Burborongh, deceased. Mr Hamilton applied for letters of administration to be issued to Thomas Chamberlain in the matter of Clara Chamberlain, deceased, and His Honor granted the order as prayed if an affidavit is filed Bhowing that no dobla are due by the deceased.

Court, Timaru, yesterday, Peter Birrell was charged with taking and carrying away £52 10a on 28th August, 1888, the money of W. C. Beswick, Deputy Assignee. Mr Perry appeared for accused and Mr Smithaon for prosecutor. Mr Smithson applied fer an adjournment. The inspecting auditor was now going through the books, and he would like the ca3B to stand over until this was oompleted. The case was adjourned to Friday, bail being allowed in two sureties of £SO each.
