AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, March 5. The wheat markets in the Australian colonies, particularly at Melbourne, are in an unsettled and excited state. At Adelaide wheat is quoted at 4s 7d to 4s B£d, at Melbourne at 6s, and roller-made flour at £l2 10a, The Sydney price is 5s 3d. The publication of the estimate showing a great deficiency in the yield will probably cause a further rise, Some exception is taken to the official estimate of the amount required for consumption in New South Wales, The statistician allows 6f bushels per head, whereas Tictoria only requires s|. The statistician defends his computation on the ground that in New South Wales the adult population is larger than in the sister colony. The G-overnment statist reports that the wheat yield is 15.1 bushels per acre. The total for the colony is 1,540,000 bushels, being a deficiency of threequarters of a million on the average for the past twenty-seven years. The drought also caused an estimated loss in other cereals of 900.000. The requirements of the colony are estimated at 8,100,000 bushels, leaving a deficiency of 6.560.000. It is estimated that Victoria and South Australia will only have available for export 4,600,000 bushels between them. New South Wales and Queensland, which also will have to import part of their flour, will therefore have to look to New Zealand and probably to America to supply their deficiencies. ENGLISH MARKETS. London, March 2. The English what market has an upward tendency ; the continental is inactive, American changing for the worse. The Phyllis’ cargo has been sold at 375.
