Ranger Bnrt visited on Saturday ll;e head waters of the Aparum, Southland, in the tributaries of which a 1 irge number of young salmon was placed last year. He has secured two specimens, which he and Mr McKay, of Hipton, an expert angler, are certain are English salmon. Mr Burt saw the fish in swarms.
Joseph Harry Bentley alias Brown, arrested at the Bluff on a charge of larceny as a bailee at Wellington, was brought before the Resident Magistrate on Eridayafternoon. The police explained that: accused had been arrested on a telegram,, and that the warrant was coming by post. The Magistrate said ho had no power to deal with accused unless a warrant was produced, and accordingly discharged him. Bentley was immediately re-arrested by the police and was brought before Mr Stock, a justice, on Saturday morning, who again discharged him on a similar' ground. Prisoner was re-arrested and will be detained until the warrant comes to' hand.
The Canterbury Lind Board have* received a report from ths Commissioner of Crown Lands authorising a certificate to be given to the Midland Railway Company tor the block of land, comprising 31,500 acres, known as White Rock run, the first block of land applied for after the concessions had been made to the company.
