Auckland, March 4.
News from Samoa to 23rd February shows that war operations have been suspended by mutual agreement pending the arrival of definite instructions from Germany. Mataafa’a camp has been several times visited by the German Consul. He advised Mataafa to disarm, but the latter declined. The Consul agreed to several proposals of Mataafa’s for ending the war. No final agreement has been come to. The German warships.have ceased intercepting Native boats, and Mataafa has promised to prevent raids on the German plantations by the Natives. On Sunday, the 10th, a gale blowing from the N.E., the schooner Matufa was driven on a reef and became a total wreck. A renewal of the gale on the 14th with greater severity caused the wreck of th». American brigantine Constitution, She was totally wrecked. She had a narrow escape of drifting on the reef during Sunday’s gale, but all the warships went to the rescue. The schooner Tamasese drifted ashore-' She was uninsured. The Germarw warship Eber, which arrived o(a 14th from Auckland, draggM"- hex anchor and drifted dangerously near the reef, but, assisted by the Olga*, steamed out of danger.
