The circular of the Oamaru Board relating to the desirability of legislation to enable public corporations to consolidate their loans, was, after some discussion, recommended to the favorable attention of the local members of the House of Representatives. A letter was read from the Marine Department saying that rhe matter ot gaz-tting the limits of the port was being attended to. A letter waa read from Messrs Cuff and Graham, of Christchurch, asking particulars and price of smf boat.—The secretary had replied naming the pricefixed, £IOO. The Minister in chjrge of the Murine Department acknowledged the receipt of the board’s request.respecting the ameodmen of the Harbor Act, and said their proposal would be considered when the amedment of the Barbours Act is taken in The board had requested the Government to amend the Act so as to relieve the Harbour Boards from liability for the consequences of any action on the part of a harbor master, as is the case with pilots, and it was decided that the secretary
should send a circular to the other boards , requesting their co-operation in an endeavour to get the Act amended as desired. The railway return ot wharfage for the fonr weeks ended Feb. 2nd was £706 lls 30d. Captain Sutter stated that when he went Home he promised to call at Lloyd’s, and give some, information about the port. He was, however, informed when he got there that he. bad better not, that Lloyd's did not want to know anything about intended work, but when the north mole is completed, he was advised, it would be a good thing to get two of Lloyd’s authorised agents from a distance, so that they would be perfectly independent, to thoroughly examine the port, the harbor works and the shipping accomodation, and to give a report, which would have great weight at Lloyd's.—The chairman said the hint regarding the Lloyd’s report should be kept in mind till the north wall is finished. The board went into committee to consider the tug question, and after a long discussion, the following resolutions were carried—Proposed by Captain Sutter, and seconded by Mr Ross: “ That the Titan bo repaired sufficiently to obtain a certificate to do the work of the port for a year, until the board can get a new tug out from England, and that the board at once arrange for a new tug for this port.” Mr Gray strongly opposed this motion. Proposed by Mr Ross and seconded by Mr Teschamakor : —‘{That the secretary communicate with the U.S.S, Company, and enquire on what conditions they would allow their Home engineer, Mr Darling, to select a steam tug for the port, and that their consulting engineer for the colony be asked to report to the board on the moat suitable tug necessary for this port." The meeting then terminated.
