PARNELL V. THE TIMES.

London, February 16. Mr Soames, solicitor for the Times, gave evidence before the Commission that Houston, secretary of the Patriotic League, brought the letters to the Times, stating that Pigott wanted £SOOO for them. After satisfying themselves that they were genuine, the Times gave Houston £BOOO, and retained the letters. Of this sum Houston paid Pigott £I7BO, Toe times paid Detective Moser, of the United States, £I4OO. They also had Mr Parnell and Mr Labouchere and others watched. Mr Lewis, solicitor for Mr Parnell, employed a detective to shadow Pigott, and the Times, unaware of this proceeding, did the same. They did not inquire how Pigott himself managed to secure the letters. They obtained a letter from Mr Labouchere to Pigott. enclosing a £lO note, and a letter from Lewis to Pigott charging the latter with committing forgery. Mr McDonald, manager of the Times, deposed that he was unaware that the letters had been offered to the Pftll Mall Gazette, February 17. A representative of the New York Herald has had an interview with Major LeOaron, the result of which is published in the London edition of the paper. LaCarou stated that ho possessed positive evidence that Mr Parnell’s advisers were party to the Phoenix Park murders, and that the whole truth had not yet been told, as the Government were unwilling to disclose certain documents to the Commission. He said further that the case appeared to have been g h up by Dr McGuire of Dublin, Kirby, M-ihcr, and Pigott.
