Melbourne, Feb. 12. A man named Frederick W. Badford has carried on business in Spencer Street, Melbourne, as a herbalist and electric practitioner for some time, and the suspicion of the detective police having been directed towards him, investigations as to the nature of his business were made. It was soon learned that illegal practices were apparently extensively carried on in the establishment. Detective Burnett had several interviews with the man with regard to a suppositious case for which his services vere required. The result was that ifter declining repeated offers of the nan to perform a criminal operation, he officer procured from him two lottles of medicines, which were subaitted to the Grovernment analytical hemist, who reported that the drugs vere such as would be calculated to reduce the object desired, but were 0 be administered in such strong doses s to be very dangerous to life, tadford was charged with selling a oxious drug for illegal purposes, ■iter his arrest a large stock of oxious drugs, besides poisons such as aloroform and strychnine, were found 1 the prisoner’s shop.
