Tanner and Browc’s bakehouse and shop, Vermont street, Ponsonby, Auckland, were destroyed by fire at 4.30 on Sunday morning. McKay’s stables at Hampden, Otago, were burnt down. The loss is £SOO. The colt Rajah was severely injured. Edgecombe, a jockey, was severely injured on the Takupuna Racecourse (Auckland) on Saturday, his spine being fractured. His lower limbs are completely paralysed. The Government have decided to destroy the infected portion of (he fhek of about 800 sheep, at Kaikoura, and to take over the infected portion of Gibson’s run. At a smoke concert held at Dunedin on Saturday evening in connection with the Bowler’s Carnival, Mr James Allen, presiding, Mr Carlton proposed the toast of “ The Visitors,” and coupled the name of Mr H. J. Raphael (ono of the Canterbury team) with the Canterbury Club. On this the members of the Canterbury Club left the room in a body. Mr Carlton then stated that be had inadvertently oroittdd to couple the name of Mr J. Delbridge, tbe VicePresident, with the toast. The Canterbury members returned to their hotel, when Mr Delbridge stated that they had not gone down there to be represented by Mr Raphael, and inferred that Mr Raphael had himself contrived to got his name coupled with the toast, and that (his had been done os a piece of satire. Mr Raphael denied that he had anything io do with getting his name substituted for (hat of Mr Delbridge. The members of the Canterbury Club are aggrieved that their Vice-President, Mr Delbridge, should have been over looked in the toast of “ Tbe Visiting Bowlers ” in favour of Mr Raphael, who is only a playing member, but they disclaim that the Entertainment Committee or any persona but Mr Raphael were to blame for the slight which In (heir opinion was conveyed.
