Leslie, proprietor of the newly-opened Lyric Theatre, i Sir G. J. Baden-Poweil states that bis experience with the Canadian-Pacific route proves that it is open all through the winter. Molloy, the Invincib’e, has bsen committed for trial on a charge of perjury. Eight thousand pounds have been subscribed up to the present in aid of the Chinese famine fund. The British Government has granted a pension of £IOO per annum to the wife of the late Mr R. A, Proctor, astronomer. February 16. At a banquet to-night at which Lord Onslow, the new Governor of New Zealand, was entertained, Lord Knntsford presided, and in proposing the toast of “Our Guest” was imperative that the responsibility of selecting all Governors for tbe colonies sbonld rest with the Imperial Government. He thought that it was their duty to select tbe best possible gentlemen. Lord Onslow in reply expressed sympathy with the colonies, and hoped to promote closer union between the colonies and tbe Homo country. The Marquis of Lome, who also addressed the assemblage, contended that the days of Downing Street dictation were at an end. A son of Mr Gladstone has evicted tour tenants from Hawarden estate, because they were five years in arrears of rent. The Unionist journals, m commenting on the matter, considers that it is parallel to tbe evictions in Ireland, Paris, February 16. An unsuccessful attempt has been made to blow up with dynamite the Post Office at Chartres, a town in the Department of Eure-et-Loire. Rome, February 14. Tbe Pope has issued an allocution , addressed to the European Powers, | urging them to make common cause with the Church, and to endeavor to ■ avoid an appeal to arms which would - prove futile as a guarantee of future * peace. He urges the Powers to let | right assert itself over might, in order j that peace may be preserved in Europe, and that each should tender to each its . own rights while strictly adhering to justice. A Russian report states that the Ameer of Afghanistan is beheading three hundred of his subjects daily, and that sixteen Russian battalions will confront him on the frontier, Belgrade, February 13. A plot has been discovered to depose the King of Servia, The leaders of the Radical party are alleged to be involved. The King’s coronation ceremony will take place in this city in May, and the occasion will be marked by great pomp and splendor. Hong-Kong, February 13. It is stated that over 200,000 persons are starving in the province of ChiaKiang, Chinese residents of this colony are petitioning England to urge the withdrawal of the American Chinees Exclusion Bills, They also protest against the action of America and Australia in placing restrictions on the immigration of Chinese, on the ground that such action is contrary to the international treaties and must result in the commercial ruin of Hong-Kong. Suez, February 15. Ii is reported that Achinoff, who took out a number of Cossacks to settle at Obok, has hoisted his flag at Layolls, in French territory, on the Red Sea. Suakim, February 16. The cavalry made a reconnaissance to-day in tbe direction of Handonb, and on arrival there found the piece deserted. The officers say that the camp is sufficient to hold 10,000 men. The cavalry, after firing the huts and destroying all material likely to be of nse to the rebels, returned to port.

Melbourne, February 15. Runting and Wright’s, accountants, liabilities are stated at £400,000 and tbe assets are said to show a surplus of £72,000. Several smaller failures, due to the land boom, are also reported. February 16, Mr Jenkins, of, tbe firm of ironfounders of that name, has failed personally. His liabilities are put down at the show a surplus
of £2,500. He is another victim of the land boom. Two land brokers named Cohen and Scott have been arrested on a charge of selling more land than they owned. Sydney, February 15. Numerous cases of garrotting have occurred recently. The crime is almost epidemic, but convictions are hardly obtainable owing to the perjury of tbe witnesses. To-day, however, the Judge made an example of two men who were convicted by sentencing them to 10 years’ penal servitude. He also ordered the arrest of five witnesses for perjury, Joe Mackay, a seaman who was arrested on a charge of causing the death of another seaman,' a Swede named Andrew Nalander,Jby K ,stabbing during a quarrel in the street, has been acquitted and discharged from custody. Among the mails destroyed in the train which caught fire were one bag for Adelaide and one for Hobart, both of which were from Auckland. Sir J, Hector states that tbe New Zealand exhibits for the Paris Exbibtion will leave on February 28lh. The fittings used in the New Zealand court at tbe Melbourne Exhibition are being shipped to Dunedin, Port Darwin, February 16. Information has reached here that a black man in the Northern Territory has murdered a man named Hamilton,
