The Pafcea Lighthouse, on the east bank of the Patea river, was burnt to the ground on Monday night, or early on Tuesday morning. For the Wellington Licensing District two of the publicans' candidates, two of temperance, and one independant were returned. Mary Keogh was committed for trial at Christchurch on Tuesday for perjury in a civil esse at the Resident Magistrate'* Oourt, m which she denied that she or her husband had bought certain goods from one James Kinley. A Narrow Escape.— A "nan _had a narrow escape of being buried alive near LyoDH. He was supposed to have died, a certificate to that effect having been granted by the doctors. On the eve of tlie funeral the watcher was alarmed to find the supposed corpse sit up and ask for drink. The man had been in a trance.
