A man named Herbert Staple, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon nt the Christchurch Hospital on a charge of indecently assaulting a girl aged eleven. The four-year-old son of Thomas Hilson, of Sefton, was killed on Wednesday by a horse tied outside a blacksmith’s shop, kicking his skull; be died instantanteoualy. Mr Harcouri Gardiner has been appointed medical electrican to the Christchurch hospital. Two Sydney capitalist, Messrs Burrows and Delfc, arrived at AuckLnd by the Ta Anau on Thursday night. One t of these gentlemen recently intended \o purchase a large piece of vacant land near the Star Hotel, Auckland, for building purposes, but since the imposition of the Property tax ha has decided not to do so. The American Consul at Auckland, Mr J, T. Campbell, is to be promoted to the position of Consul at Foochow, China, and Mr J. D. Connolly, of Occidental, Cal,, has been appointed to the vacancy, and will shortly assume thedmies of the office. The Presbyterian Synod at its meeting at Dunedin on Wednesday, passed a resolution calling on the City Councils and Government to put a stop to glove fights in public halls, they being a disgrace to our civilisation. They also passed a resolution in favour of the cause of prohibition. A detective discovered the s«cond of the gold watches which were stolen from the bedroom of a lodger at the Empire Hotel, Wellington, on the 28th of last month. The watch was discovered “ planted ” in a rather peculiar receptacle, namely, in a jam tin which wos secreted amongst some furze on the terrace. On Thursday afternoon a man named Rooke was brought before the Resident Magistrate for the robbery. The watches were identified in each instance, and the accused was remanded till Monday, 1
