AN AFRICAN REVOLUTION.
Congo despatches received at London on Jan. 11 report a revolution at Uganda, the overthrow of Mwanga, and the enthronement of his elder brother. The English and French missions were destroyed. The missionaries all fled, and a general massapre of native converts ensued. Immense stores, accumulated by Stanley and Emin Bey, were all destroyed. Mohammedanism is fully restored, and Christianity swept away. The Arabs threaten to exterminate the Christian missionaries in Central Africa. The revolution is due to Mwanga’s body guard. He intended to abandon these followers to starvation on an island in Lake Nyanza but instead of entering the canoes that were to convey them thither they returned to the capital and attacked Mwanga’s palace, from which the King fled. They put his brother Kawae in his place, but as they appointed Christians to the Principal offices the Arabs became enraged, murdered the Christian offic’als, and replaced them with Mohammedans. Mwanga is a prisoner at Magu, He has appealed to the English missionfor assistance. The Arabs say the movement is in revenge for England’s policy, and have proclaimed Uganda to be Mohammedan. Many letters from Emin Bey and Stanley were destroyed by the burning of the stations. The extinction of all mission stations in Central Africa is feared.
