Baldwin made a successful balcon ascent and parachute descent at Auckland on Monday. Ha went up to a height of 2003 feet before he left the baloon, Ranger M’Kay, at Dipton, Southland, when putting trout back into the stream from the roadside pool*, after the flood in the Oreli, found a fine specimen of American brook trout, a few of which were liberated some time back, but none of which were seen since. The steamer Elderslie arrived at Oamaru on Monday. She took on board the Oamaru portion of her cargo and left for London, via Timaru and Port Chalmers, on Wednesday last, A man named William Elder was found dead on Saturday afternoon, on the road between Maerewhenna diggings and Duntroon, Otago, Elder was returning from Maerewheoua, driving a horse and buggy, and had been thrown out and dragged soma distance, having become entangled in the reins. A meeting of the Oamaru Hospital Trustees was held on Monday, when Dr Macgregor, inspector of hospitals, was present. Ho was asked an opinion on the vexed question of whether it was better to throw the hospital open to all surgeons in the district or not. In reply he said that he could not advise the hospital being thrown open unless a house surgeon were appointed, and that as the institution was well managed as things were, it was better to leave well alone. ( it is reported in Greymouth that the : Grey Valley and Westport coal company have disposed of their mines to an English company. Tho Christchurch Gas Company have declared a dividend of 5 per cent for the past half year, and carried £473 forward. The Chairman said the company were in a position to start an electric lighting company, their premises being suitable. I Professor Baldwin has left for Sydney, j Mr A. M. O livier, winner of the Champion Chess ’Tournament at Christchurch, was presented with a piece of plate on Tuesday evening.
