The Doric left the Cape on the 18th for Wellington via, Hobart, Mr Alfred Glass, solicitor's clerk, Wellington, died suddenly on Monday night of apoplexy. The Alameda, with the colonial mails of December Slat arrived at San Francisco on January 19th, timetable date. The Zealandia with the English mails of December 29th left San Francisco on January 15th, three days late. At a meeting of the Oaraaru Harbour Board on Monday the secretary read a statement showing that the revenue of the harbour had increased since 1886 nearly £2OOO, and the expenditure had decreased. A man named John Smith was on Monday at Gisborne charged with attempted rape on a woman of sixty. He stands remanded. Harvest has commenced in the Wanganui district. Barley and wheat are looking well, and oats promise a large yield. At a well attended meeting at Dunedin of sympathisers with the Irish cause, a committee was appointed to canvass for subscriptions for the Parnell defence fund. £75 have already been subscribed. At the Supreme Court, Wellington, on Monday, the jury returned a verdict for £SOO in the libel case, Larnacb v. New Zealand Herald. His Honor granted costa on the middle scale. The claim was for £3OOO. In the Supreme Court, Dunedin, Wm. Ridley, warehouseman, sues the Hon. George Fisher for £2OO for breach of contract. In August last Mr Fisher, through the agency of Haydon, landlord of the Criterion, offered to sell 200 shares in the Now Zealand Shipping Company at five shillings. The offer was accepted, though the completion of the transaction was postponed at Mr Fiahr’s request. Ho now declines to complete. The plaintiff astcs the court to order the transference of the shares, and failing that, for damages. Defendant denies the authorisation of the sale through Haydon, though ho admits ho sold to him, conditional on the directors’ acceptance of the transfer, which is withheld.
