An oyster and fishing company with a capital of £95,000 has been formed at Invercargill. The company has already purchased 10 vessels, and are securing a steamer. A man named Joyce was fined £5 and costs, with the alternative of 21 days’ hard labour, at the Auckland police court on Saturday for bringing ashore from the Tainui 19H> of tobacco on which duty had not been paid. A fire broke out in Courtenay Place, Wellington, on Saturday morning at 2.30, and destroyed the premises ot Jackson Parker, butcher, Stevens, greengrocer, Calton, bootmaker, and a small shop occupied as a dairy. All the premises wore owned by Mr Spicer, over which he had a policy of £I9OO in the Northern office, partly reinsured, and £l5O in the Phoenix. Collins’ grocer shop was also partly injured. There is no cine as to the origin of the fire. Edward Cahill, the jockey, better known as “Sprightly," died at Qreymouth on Saturday, after a short illness, of inflammation of the longs. A lad named David McGillvray, aged 12 years, lost his life in the estuary at Invercargill on Friday, some miles from town. Deceased went out with a party of young boys, and was struck on the head and knocked overboard by the boom, the halyards having given way as the boat was going about. He sank immediately.
