At a meeting of the Hokitika Land Board on Wednesday, Messrs Duncan and Robinson, representing intending seniors, brought under the notice of the board a serious hindrance to settlement, owing to the Midland Railway reservation. The company has practically six million acres from which to select. It was stated that they wait till an applicalion is made for land, and a valuation put in, when they put their price upon it, generally more than double the valuation. If tiie settlor buys t>:ey make a profit of a hundred per cent, if not they don't select. The board oromisod to bring the renrefientaliona before the Government, and passed a resolution that permission be arranged to deal on the old footing with applicalions. One hundred and twenty settlers are wanting from 10 to 12 thousand acres. One of the deputation said out of fifty applications before the company only three would compete, owing to the eiorbilant price asked.
