An Extraordinary Curiosity. In a limestone cave sit two Maoris in a capital state of preservation, and beside them there is a kit of fern, which is also in a thoroughly good state of preservation. The Maoris have no traditions as to how the bodies came there. The natives are afraid to enter the cave, as they believe it to be tenanted by a taniwha. j They conjecture that tbe two old Maoris must have been caught by the taniwha on entering his cave. Levels Hoad District. — A meeting of the ratepayers m the Levels Road District dissatisfied with the allocation of the Board’s funds was held in the i Kerrytown schoolroom on Wednesday evening. The meeting was called by Mr Balfour, a member of the Levels Ro«d Board, and was fairly attended. Mr W. Oldfield was voted to the chair. Mr Balfour addressed the meeting at length, and suggested that the new district should comprise the whole of the plain from Butler’s road (the eastern boundary of the Pleasant Point Park) to the sea, with the Point road to the Washdyke creek, and that creek to the sea, as the southern boundary, cutting off from the present ward the atrip between the old road and the sea from Washdyke to Wai-iti road, and taking in the upper part of the plain from Kerrytown to Butler’s road. The rates in the Seadown Ward (so reduced) would be, on the present scale, £420 or £430, and on the piece taken from the Point Ward £25 or £3O more—say, £450 altogether. Ho showed that the expenses of the proposed new district, including interest on its share of the overdraft and probable contributions to hospitals and charitable aid, should not exceed £l5O, leaving £3OO to be spent on the roads in tbe district instead of about £l5O, That would bs the practical outcome of the operation—they would have about £3OO instead of £l5O for the district. During the last nine months, which be taken to be the whole year so far road work goes, only £l3O had been spent in the Seadown Ward, The proceedings would be by petition to the County Council, and if two-thirds of the ratepayers in the proposed new district signed the petition tbe County Council must constitute the district. After some discussion, during which it was agreed to omit the portion of tbe Point Ward proposed to be included, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Quinn i seconded by Mr D. Hoara—“That a nev 1 1 road district be formed, to be called tbe Seadown Road District, the boundaries of the ( new district to be tbe same as at present, i except that that port of the ward between the i Washdyke Hotel and Timaru be left out, and ] that the necessary steps be taken to carry out i this resolution,” Mrßilfour said a petition would be sent round for signatures, and votes of thanks to the chairman, Mr Balfour, and a to the Rev, Father Fauvel for the use of the i school, having been passed, the meeting I terminated.—At a meeting of the ratepayers * v ut the Washdyke on Thursday eysning a o similar resolution was passed, i S
