ENGLISH MARKETS
London, January 10. The Standard, in a review of the markets, says that the imports of cereals in 1889 will be larger, in consequence of inferior quality, and there will be a good opening for Australian superior qualities. Stocks of wool are light, and the woollen trade is prosperous. The drought in Australia has assisted to harden prices. Quotations for frozen mutton and beef are unchanged. Two off-coast cargoes of wheat have been sold at 39s 6d. New Zealand long berried is quiet at 42s 6d. Australian wheat ex store 48s. Tallow, mutton, 35s to 35s 6d; beef, 34s to 34s 6d. Hides, 3|d to 4d. The kauri gum market is flat. An attempt is being made by an English syndicate to create a corner in tobacco.
