Samuel Shaw is now being tried in the Supreme Court at Dunedin on a charge of mak'ng a false declaration to the Registrar of Deaths at West Taieri, Ho is defended by Mr Denniatoo. The indictment charges defendant with living with the wife of Jas. Sparkes, and when the woman died defendant declared she was his wife. The wife of Sydney Taiwhanga, M.H.R. applied to the Auckland Charitable Beard on Thujaday for maintenance. She staled her husband refused to support her, and when she sued him Dr Giles decided the Act did not apply to aborigines. The Board declined to assist, Mrs Taiwhanga threatens to apply for a divorce. Sydney states that he has always provided a good home for his wife at Kaitohe if she chooses to stay there. SUMMER, 1889.
