AUCTIONEERS' REPORT. TIMARTJ. Mr B. R. Guinness (for the Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports for the week ending Saturday, January sth, as follows ; Washdyke Yards The holidays have to a certain extent; interfered with business generally, and the attendance at these sales has been small. Cattle: The entry of both fat and stores was below the average, and very few lots changed hands, Beef is plentiful, with a downward tendency. Sheep: In fat sheep the market is well supplied, aud values are receding. At these yards and other fixtures the numbers show a falling off on previous entries. Biddings were dragging and) indifferent; in fact, in many cases it 1
was extremely difficult to elicit any competition. We sold a line of three parts fat crossbred maiden ewes and wethers at 9s 6d; others brought 9s 9d and9s7d. Land—We report having sold privately a highly improved farm of 229 acres, a few miles from Timaru, at a satisfactory price, to a gentleman recently arrived in South Canterbury. Wool—ln Dunedin the sales have passed off under most favorable circumstances, and higher rates were obtained than was anticipated. We are advised that several new buyers have just arrived from Melbourne, consequently the prospect of the coming sale is extra good. Sheepskins—Privately we have disposed of 1557 factory pelts and lambs skins at the following prices:—Lambskins, 2s; pelts, Is 4d to Is 6d each. Hides—The market remains inactive. We have sold all on hand at the following quotations, viz.: 601bs and over, 3|d ; 501bs to 591bs, 3|d ; light and inferior, 2|d j cut and slippy, per lb. Tallow and Pat—The, demand is good, and prices obtained are:— Bough fat, 10s 6d to 14s (for best) ; tallow, 15s to 16s per cwt.

London, January 3. The imports of Australian wines into England during 1888 were 76,000 gallons in excess? of the quantity imported! in the previous year. The following are the latest quotations for frozen meat: —Australian muttcn 3f d to 4d!, beef 3£d to 4d... The> total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,272,000 quarters, and for the Continent 404,000 quarters. The American visible wheat supply is 38,375,000 bus'hels. An Australian off coast cargo of wheat has been sold at from 39s to 39s ftL;; .Plour, ex store, is quoted at from 288 6d.to 295. Leather, 9|d to 10d. January 4. Money is declining owing to abundant supplies. January 5. A cargo of Adelai do wheat has been sold at 29s 9d.
