THE LATE PROFESSOR BROWN.
As all hope that Professor Brown, who was lost in the Manipeuri country or the Bth instant, will now be found alive must have been abandoned by the most sanguine of his friends, the following brief sketch of his career' will (says the Southland Times) bd interesting : John Mainwariug Browjh was born in 1851, and educated at ■ Tunbridge Grammar School, studying (bore from 1867 to 1872. In. jche latter year lie obtained one of /the exhibitions of £IOO a year given by the school, and tenable for four /years at either Oxford or Cambridge. He chose Cambridge, and dntered College. In 1875 be took, bis B.A. degree, coming out second 'in the tiivt class of the Historical T/npos. This success he supplemented 'by gaining, the following year, the/ lirst of (he two Wbewell scholarship* for inter-. national law, open for/competition to anyone under the ag/b of 25. Prom 1870 to 1881 he acted as lecturer in History and Political Economy under the University of /’Cambridge Local Lectures Syndicate?. He delivered lectures in vanom/parts of England ; pue of these appointments being at the Crystal Pabt/ce. Ju IBS! he acted as lecturer in/History at Cambridge University ipiider the Board of His-, torical Studies He was called to the English Bar in 1881, and shortly after he was elected Professor of English at Otago University.
