Lawrence Oliphant, diplomatist and author, has died from cancer of the lungs, from which disease he suffered intense pain daring the last five months. His death, however, was painless. Parliament waa prorogued yesterday, Sir, Horace Davey, a Grladstonisn Liberal, has been returned for Stockton-on-Tees, beating a Unionist. News has been received that the murderer of Major Barttelot wss executed at Stanley Polls in July last. Warsaw, December 21. One thousand Austrian and German subjects have been expelled from this city without any reason being assigned.

Four prisoners were beheaded in the market place each day, one after another. Their eyes were not bandaged, and a blunt sword was used. The plunger case of the pump at the. Maryborough mine fell down the shaft, and killed a miner named Whellock. Another was carried 80 feet under the water and wa3 drowned, besides which several men were more or less severely injured. Typhoid fever is largely on the increase in Melbourne and suburbs. Sydney, December 22. Butter has risen one shilling owing to the small supply in the market and the Christmas demand. Dec. 25. Wentworth House Hotel was destroyed by fire this morning. Two lodgers, named Armstrong and Caulfield, while endeavoring to make their escape from the flames by a wiadow, fell to the pavement below, a distance of 60 feet, and were killed. Brisbane, December 21. A pedlar was brutally mnrdered at Charters Towers to-day, and three foreigners have been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the murder.
