TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of theiTeniuka School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs J, T. M. Hayhurst, J. Winning, E. Brown, J. Blyth; and A. E. Allan.
MINTTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. THE DISTBIBTJTION OF PEZIES. The Chairman sla'.ed that finding business engagements would prevent him; from presenting the priies as arranged; ohe had written to Mr A. E. Gh Shodes, M.H.E., asking him if in the district to distribute the prizes. As the,Committee were;aware, Mr Rhodes had attended, and he (the Chairman) regretted that ■b member of the Committee had been present at the distribution .to support him. He had; since been told that the priie giving gathering was the most poorly attended of any. . Mr Winning said he had made arrangements to be present, but at the last moment was detained by business. He regretted the circumstances excessively, as it appeared as a slight upon the teachers as well as Mr Rhodes. Mr Brown also expressed regretfor his absence. He had desired to be present, but unexpected business engagements prevented him. Mr Blyth said' that the only excuse that he could otfer was that he had quite forgotten the date. Mr Winning thought that it would be £ graceful fact- if the Committee instructed! tne 'Secretary to write to Mr: ; Bhodes, thanking him for his courtesy; in attending that day, and also detailing the reasons for the nonattendance of the Cemmittee. The suggestion was adopted. HEAD MASTER'S EEPOET. The Head Master's report was read as follows: I have the honor to aubmit the following report' for the month of November and December:— November —Average weekly roll: boys 190, girls; 159, total 349; average attendance: boys 155.8, girls 132.2, total 288; highest attendance : beys 172, girls 150, total 322. December —Average weekly roll: boys 185.5, girls 155ii5, total 841; average attendance: boys 141.3, giris 121.8, total 263.1; highest attendance: b0y5,147, girls 153, tetal2Bo. I enclose 12s, being amount of stationery fees received since last meeting.
I am, etc, _ W. Bbtabs. BBSiaiTATION. Mr M.McLeod wrote reminding the Committee that his term of apprenticeship was over, and intimating his intention of leaving the Bchool. He also asked the Committee for a testimonial. Mi McLeod's resignation was accepted, and ■ viewing the eicellent work done by the standards under his care the Committee had no hesitation in giving him a most favorable testimonial.
THE VACANT PUPII. TEACHEBSHIP. Two applications were received for the position caused through Mr McLeod's resignation. Both were considered, hut it was suggested that it would he more satisfactory to invite applications fer the position. On the motion of Mr Winning it was resolved—" Chairman he authorised to jnvite applications for the position/of pupil teacher as .soon as the,^Board of Education had duly notified their acceptance of Mr McLeod's resignation." -—-/ ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £9 Is 6d were passed for payment. f ;'" INSPECTOR'S EEPOBT. 4The Inspector's report on the recent examination was read. The following is a synopsis of the same:— Standard VII. : Presented 7. Standard VI. : Presented .17, absent 0, excepted 1, failed 3, paßsed 13. Standard T.: Presented 19, absent 0, exoepled 0, failed 9, passed 10. Standard IV. : Presented 29, absent 1, excepted 2, failed 0, passed 26. Standard 111. : Presented 43, absent 1, excepted 2, failed 7, passed 33. Standard 11. : Presented 44, absent 1, ?excepted 1, failed 4, passed 38. Standard I.: Prßsented 34, absent 0, excepted I, failed 3, passed 30. Preparing for Standard X. : 149. Total: Presented 342, absent 3, excepted 7, failed 26, passed 150.. Percentage of passes, 43; percentage of failures) 14. *->; Glass Subjects—Drawing, 71 marks ; history, 62 ; geography, 82 ; elementary science, object lessons, etc., 62; total, " : 277. Percentage of Class subjects, 69. ' ."Additional Subjects— Eepetition and !,Recitation, 15marks; drill and exercises, 15; singing, 18; needlework, 16 ; subject matter of reading lessons, 16. Additional marks, 80. _ . | Class Standard VII. (7 Pupils) : This class made a good appearance in the work of class Standard YI. ."Class P.—The infant department is well conducted. A marked improvement has taken place in reading and writing. The school has passed a very good examination. The pupils are wellmannered, and very fair order is maintained. Jas. Mr "Winning moved, Mr Allan seconded, and it was carried:—" That the Committee desire to express their appreciation of the Inspector's report now submitted, and their gratification 'at the results, and to convey to the teachers their thankß for the attention paid to the instruction of the scholars which has led to this favorable "report." The meeting then terminated.
