An Anti-poverty Society has been established in Cambridge, Auckland. Upwards of 200 tons of potatoes have been shipped this season for the South from Manuka alone.
B. Pepper, saddler, Otaki, Wellington, has issued a writ against Constable Onrr, claiming £2OO damages for false imprisonment. The case arises out of the arrest of Pepper in August last on a charge of larceny by Carr, who was then stationed at Otaki.
In consequenoe of the continued theft and ■mutilation of books at the public library, Christchurch, the Board of Governors decided to offer a reward of. £lO for the conviction of persons so offending. Phenomenally bad weather prevails for this time of the year in the Wellington district.
A man named Joe Rouse hanged himself at Jp,.e: Hutt, Wellington, on Wednesday. Orlando Gorringe, an old and respected settler, died suddenly at Bernride, Wellington, on Tuesday. His Excellency the Governor on Thursday signed the papers for the release of Baldwin from gaol in consequence of the prisoner's health breaking down. Baldwin, a journalist of Gisborne, was convicted some months ago of criminal libel. It is currently reported at Christchurch that Mr Denniston, of Dunedin, is to be the'new Judge.
