JnraEitAi UNDIR Djf MODXTIIS. The following appears ia the Mirlborough Times:—"ln aa out-of-the-way district on the West Coast a publican died, and it was necessary that the coffin containing the body should be taken a considerable distance to the burial ground. The river was in flood and no other conveyance was possible but a canoe, and two friends of the deceased undertook the passage. Unfortunately the frail vessel capsuled daring the journey and one of the occnpants, who *as a good swimmer, managed to reach ♦.he shore. The other, however, was helpless, and clinging to the bottom of the canoe «ras carried down the river, sheuting at the top of his yoice to his wife, and imploring her to kiss the children as there was so hope for him. But a kindly Providence iatervened and the man was brought up on a bar down the stream and made the best of bis way to his home, where he found his family mourning tbe lohb of their breadwinner. As to tbe its contents, the/ were reported to have sunk like a stone, and it was thought there was little chanee of their receiving Christian bnrial. Events, however, proved the falsity of this conclusion, as a settler living down the river having caught sight ef the oanoe bronght it to ahore, when he foind the coffin firmly fixed to the inside, and this probably had kept the vessel afloat."
