COLONIAL GOVERNORS.

Lokdon, November 27. In the House of Lords to-day, Lord Knutsford made a statement with reference to the appointment of a Governor for Queensland. He said that Sir H. A. Blake had pleaded that it would be extremely unpleasant for him to accept Queensland, and had been allowed to resign. Lord Knutsford contended that Sir H. Blake was eminently fitted for the post, and that the tact and judgment he had displayed in his administration of affairs at the Bahamas and Newfoundland had amply justified the selection made by the Colonial Office, The opposition of the Queensland Government was the result of misapprehension and ignorance of Sir H. A, Blake’s qualities, and the services he had rendered.

It is considered almost certain that Sir H. A. Blake will be appointed to the Mauritius, and the vacancy at Queensland be offered to Lord Balfour, of Burleigh. Four noblemen have refused the Governorship of Queensland. November 29.

It is reported that Lord Knutsford has cabled to one of the colonial Governments the name of the gentleman whom the Colonial Office has selected as Governor,

Lord Balfour of Burleigh has declined the Governorship of Queensland. Melbourne, November 26.

Sir Bryan O’Longlin’s motion that Victoria should support the other colonies in the position they had taken up with regard to the appointment of Governors, was negatived last night by 59 to 8. On the result of the division being made known the members of the House and occupants of the galleries rose in a body and sang the National Anthem,
