GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.
A meeting of this council was held on Monday. BreaenL— Messrs Balfour (chairman), Macby, Moore, Howell, and Barker. j
Mr Howell asked whether &be plans drawn by the council’s engineers were the pronerty,of the engineers or the council. —The cbaiinirtii said of the council..—Mr Howell said he understood the'e were very few of them io the office.
The grant of £2O asked for by tho WocHbury Cemetery Board was made, enquiry having bien made into the legal position of the council with regard to it.
A letter wns read from Mr Tiipp in reference to the proposed Orari-Waihi water-race. He stated several objections to the plan prepared by Mr Marchant for this work. Tho race, it was proposed, would be 12ft deep at the intake, and ''would run out to the level 30 chains away. The plan did pot show how this deep caoal would destroy or damage his paddocks. He had two water-races of bis own at present in (hose paddocks, and the plan ought to'Show how the proposed race would affect his races and his fences. He protested strongly against the, racy being constructed as proposed. It, would destroy his paddocks. It was proposed to take water from the south stream; there had: only been a south stream for the last two years or so, and any day tho stream might return to the other side of the island. If they were (o go up th» river for about a mile or so higher than was proposed they could g«t witer apt do very little damage. He would strongly object to the council cutting up the paddocks, andbemustbesupplied with a prope. 1 plan before he would allow anything no be doue.—:lt was decided to refer tho letter to the engineer, Mr Howell remarking that they should try to avoid inconveniencing anyone, even if it involved a little more expense;
Mr M. Kerapater asked to have his land included in the Orari-Waihi waterraoe district.
Mr Murray, Orari Station, asked for ;a branch race from the Rangitata system.; Oh the application of the Geraldine Road Board for a de'egation of control to enable them to clear willows out of the Waihi River, between Geraldine and Winchester, or, as an alternative, that the council would do what was necessary to clear the water-way, in the course of a long discussion, it was explained by Mr Barker that in some cases at least ’the river had encroached on freeholds, and the owners had jlaiited willows and gorge " to prevent fur her damage, and they would of course object to this vegetation being removed. It thus became a difficult question. The application was hot quite in due form, having only come verb lly from the chairman, and it was decided to tend word to the road board to that effect.
Mr Moore moved, Mr Mackay secondrd, and it was carried unanimously—“ That Mr Balfopr be re-elected chairman for the ensuing year.” .r Mr Howell moved that ihe secretary (Mr F. W, Stubbs) be appointed treasurer. He did not see the use of one of the ' members being treasurer.- Carried, witb an .instruction that he take out n Bond for £SQO. s o . Messrs Biltour, Barker, Moore, and Hayhurst were re ; appointed members of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, gpd Messrs Balfour and Howell of the Tiinarn High School Board.
