A HIGHWAYMAN SHOT BY A WOMAN.
. Sait Antonio, Tex., Sept. 21. The " Lone Highwayman," who has for the last two years been a terror to travellers in the vicinity of Kerryville, has been killed. He was shot by Mrs Lizzie Hay, at her home on tho head waters on the Eio Sabinal, Handera County, on Monday. The ;<cene is so remote from railroad or telegraph service that the news did not reach town, until to-day, when Mrs Hay visited the city with a company of friends, che said : " Last Monday morning 1 was sitting in my room, when suddenly a masked man appeared on the front gallery. I told him to leave or I'd kill him. He laughed: " You're a plucky woman, but I'll have what I want out of this house, or burn it down over your head." By this time I had a needle gun and he had entered I drew it down on him within eighteen inches of his heart, but it snapped and he said: "I'll kill you,'' at the same time producing a lon<4 keen.bladed knife and aimed it at my throat. I warded off the blow, but the next time he struck the end of the knife stuck in my forehead, makinj; an ugly gash. At the same timo I reversed the gun and struck him over the head, felling him to the floor, and before he could rise I had reversed the gun and pulled the trigger. This time it went off, the bullet taking effect in his left side. He gave a yell and rolled out on the porch. I looked for another cartridge but the blood was streaming down my face, so I coald not find them. I wiped the blood off with my apron and reloaded my gun as soon as I found my cartridges. He had by this time almost reached his horse. I took good aim and fired, but I don't think I hit him. My husband was up in the caiinn, but when he came home a few hours after dark he organised a party of rangers. They traced the man for twenty miles by his blood and found him dead. His name is unknown, but he is recognised as the same man depredations have for two years terrorized the whole of Handera County."
