The Wnips, ship, from London, arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday. Mr C. Louisson was yesterday re-elected mayor of Christchurch. During October the Wellington Benevolent Institution supplied 10,000 rations to indigent persons. The Trustees decided to ask the R.M. to communicate with them before committing children to Industrial Schools, it being pointed out that the cost of keeping children here was far less than the amount the Churitab'e Aid Board was called upon to contribute for their maintenance in the schools. The butchers’ picnic at Wellington yesterday «as one of the most successful they have had. The weather was delightful. The procession of horses nnri order carts were nearly a mile in 'ength, and all were gaily decorated. The whole of Cobb and Cos plant was engaged in taking out families. A local candidate in the person of Mr J, Woodward is out to contest the Lmcoln seat.
A Protestant League has been formed at Dunedin. Its objects are to propagate and defend Protestant doctrines, maintain the principles of civil and religious liberty, unite Protestants of all denominations in one common cause against the errors of Popery and infidelity, to promote the return of Protestant men of principle to Parliament, to press the claims of the Bible on public recognition, and to resist whatever tends to religious inequality. The exhibits for the Waipawa Exhibition are now arriving, and the electric lighting apparatus to the extent of 10,000 candle power is on its way. There will be a magnificent display of fireworks on one or two nights during the exhibition.
Bishop Luck has received a loiter from Cardinal Rompolli, Secretary of State at the Vatican, acknowledging the handsome writing table forwarded to iiis Holiness the P(Tpe as a jubilee gift from the Catholic clergy in Auckland. A man engaged pile driving on the property of Mr W. H. Levin, Upper Hutt, Wellington, has discovered a couple of small nuggets. A further search is being made, but it is thought that the find is not an important one. It is reported that the find of nuggets in the Upper Hutt district, Wtllington, turns out to be incorrect, only the colour being obtained. The men are still fossicking about the creek and riverbed. J . T. Robinsoo, secretary to the Blenheim Education Board, and generally supervisor of examinations, baa issued a writ for £IOOO for libel against the Evening Mail for the publication of reflections on the supervision of the scholrrships examination at Blenhiem uttered by Mr Huratbouse and Mr Harkness at the Nelson Education Board.
