The Irish mpmbers strongly opposed the grant, asserting that a portion of the sum had been used by Government to subsidise the Times- case against Mr Parnell. Fr W, Smith, replying to' this accusation, gave a positive denial that any money bad been improperly used by Government, and he outlined. in 1 detail the expenditure without disclosing particular payments made to individnals.
The announcement that Russia has concluded negotiations for a new loan has caused surprise, as the Minister of Finance recently declared that a loan was unnecessary till next year. Mr Timothy Harrington, M.P. for Dublin Harbour.; has been arrested on a charge nf : aiding the Plan of Campaign. Several officials of the National League are to be arrested on a similar charge. At Manchester to-day a goods train travelling on the overhead line of railway toppled into the street below. Fortunately no lives were lost, but several people were injured. A brig entering the river Tees struck on a sandbank, and lifeboats were proceeding to the stranded vessel to bring the crew ashore, when one capsizsd and eight men were drowned in full view of the crowds of spectators assembled on the shore. A sensational shooting case occurred to-day in the principal street of Sandharst. It appears that there has bean a long , standing dispute between O'Keefe, ;a rai'way contractor, and Russell, a sub-contractor. The men met in. the strati this morning. Ruk. sel drew a revolver on O'Keefe, and fired two shots at him, but both missed their mark. thpn/ rushed at each other, and a grappling struggle for life ensued. Before the bystanders could interfere Euseell disengaged himself sufficiently to again draw the revolver, and again fired at O'Keefe. This time the sbofc smashed the letter's frontal bone, Ruswell, thinking he had killed his enemy, turned his revolver on himself, and blew bis own brains orit; O'Keefe now lies in a dangerous condition.
