From the Under-Secretary for Public Works, intimating that a new Public Works Act would be introduced next session, and asking the Board’s opinion on its provisions. iAteetiews* Mr W. Shiers waited on the to state that he had been instructed to wait upon the Board in reference to the road near Mr Kelland’s. He handed in a letter from Mr H. H Pitman stating the ’School Commis. sioners could not sell any of the land through which it was desired to make a road, but that it could be taken under the Public Works Act. He (Mr Shiers) suggested to divert the* river, hut found the adjoining neighbors objected, and so they found it

better to protect it. He submitted a plan of the proposed protection. The Chairman said it would he better if permission could be got from Mr Kelland to divert the road on to his land. There was no objection, only that the School Commissioners had not the power to seU the land or grant it. Mr Shiers said certainly it would be better to divert the road if it could be done. Mr Archer, in reply to the Chairman, also said it would be better to divert the road. The Chairman said that there was a new Public Works Act to be introduced next session, and a clause could be introduced to give the Commissioners power to give the land for the purposes of a road. Mr Shiers said Mr Kelland had stated he would offer no objection to the road, provided it was fenced. The advertising, fencing, and paying for the land would, he thought, come to about £SO. After the subject had been talked over, it was decided to send an official reply to Mr Shiers. , Mr Woodhead called to ask for the

formation of the road leading from Mr Parke’s road to Mr White’s road or the old Boiling Down road. The Overseer said certainly many roads were made which were less required. About 70 chains of it were necessary. It was decided to call for tenders for the work. Mr Guild waited on the Board to ask a little gravel to he put on the road at Trevenna. There was only about 10 or 12 chains of it. There

was a graval pit there quite close. It 1 was a very trifling thing altogether. It was very bad last winter, and he could not go through it with the buggy. t The Chairman said it was a reasonable request, and it was not costly. It was decided to have the work done. oteeseee’s eepoet. The Overseer’s report was read as follows !*— To the Chairman and members.
