RECAPTURE OF A PRISONER.
Constables Drake and McCormack ■ reached Raupaki Pah, between Heathcote and Sumner, late on Friday, r and saw two Maoris coming down the bill, one of whom they recognised as the escaped prisoner Hoani Mare. "When about 200 yards off he : recognised-them, and ran along Governor's Bay Boad. They gave chase with a Maori named Mo Mo. The fugitive, finding they were gaining, stopped, picked up two large stones, and threw them at McCormack, missing him. McCormack closed with r Mare, who struggled fiercely, making his teeth almost meet in the constable's left cheek, just under the ear. Drake c> and Mo Mo came to his assistance and
I? the prisoner was overpowered. He ,: was then conveyed to the Lyttelton gaol, ppon him were foand five silk handerphieiß, aI giiantjty of fobacpb, cigarettes, pipe, and 22s 4d in cash. . before he was arrested at Kaiapoi he hid it, and when he escaped he went and got it. He said he escaped from Addington gaol at 6 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 22nd. He had his dinner in the Eaiapoi Hotel and then went to Papanui. He went into the bush and remained there Tuesday and Wednesday, on Thursday he went to Christchurch, where he stayed for a week, walking the streets at night and sometimes during the day, and sleeping with some Chinamen. He denied having been at the pah, where he was arrested, before. The prisoner looks in splendid health and apparently has suffered little from anxiety during the 12 days of his unlawfully gained liberty.
