Whitebait Stobiks.—Last Saturday's sun shone brightly down on a gentleman who so far has resisted the wiles and fascinations of the gentler sex, and has felt quite happy as a baohelor in a bachelor's quarters, It also shone with equal brilliancy on a lady of the Native race, .who hawked whitebait through the town. Calebs was cdmly contemplating the eternity of matter, the uncertainty of life, the heartaohts and the thousand natural shocks love makes men heir to, and kindred subjects, when the lady with ihe whitebait and dusky countenance bore down on him with a smile that melted down all h's toioism, as Bhe mvited him to purchase some of berdalieieus whitebait. EL» did, and as the lady departed a friejd, who witnessed tha transaction, remarked that whitebait were very nice, but very troublesome to cook. " What is the best way to cook them ? " I asked the wifeless man, and his friend replied that he must cut them open and clean the inside out of them, and gave him same fmrlher culinary instructions of an equally useful nature. Ccslebs looked on his dish of whitebait in dismay. How long would it lake him to operate in the manner indicated on the myriads of tiny fish, whose pearly eyes glittered in the setting sun P was the question that agitated his brain, as he replied that surely that was not necessary. Another friend who happened to ba standing by assured him that it was, and that when whitebait found their way to his domicile all hands and the cook turned to and oleaaed them. This was enough. Our friend's first resolve was to throw them out, but from doing this he was dissuaded by his advisers, and the whole affair resulted in his making u present of the whitebait to a man who had a wife. There is no one who finds more fun in the affair now than the baohelor himself* There is another whitebait story whioh may as well be tacked on to this. Some time ago a certain lady of Temuka bought some white bait, but she was ignorant of how jso treat them, and so was her servant. The latter asked her mistress what she was to do with the whitebait, and was told to cut the heads off them. After haying a look about the town the girl sat down to do as she was tojd, and worked very hard at them for the greater part of the night, and when her mistress got up in the morning she found that there was scarcely a sign of the whitebait left.

The Okrikas afterwards cooked and ate the bodies of their victims. The British Resident, with an armed party, rescued ten captives and restored order. The chief offenders were heavily fined.
Tee London Mitbskbs.—The London correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald states that at the inquest on the body of the last victim of the London murders Dr Baxter gave it ai his opinion that there was every reason to believe that the murders were committed for the purpoie of obtaining spooimens of portions of the human bed;. They were the work, not of a lunatic, but of » medical student who is a surgeon, for tbs body was cut up in a way that showed that the assassin knew eiaetly where {to find the organ he wanted.
